Personal Statement
Inspiration and Interests |
I have always been a keen enthusiast of film. I combined my background of studying music and now sound production practitioner to look at the correlation between audio and film. I take great joy in watching film and also listening to music; examining and evaluating their works in a research project would give me great satisfaction. The project I’d like to undertake is that of combining the two audio and film and how to create a strong bond between visual and audio. In particular looking at the film technique Mise en scene. What I am really interested to investigate is how directors are able to tell a story without the use of dialogue and the human reaction to what is happening on screen. How do sound designers and composers drive the story on screen without there being dialogue between characters? I also want to examine the impact that sound design and other characteristics such as lighting, costumes, placement and direction have on the overall scene. Some of my favourite directors would be Jim Jaramusch, David Fincher, Alfred Hitchcock, Christopher Nolan, Joel and Ethan Coen and David Lynch. There is a difference in terms of time era, big budget movies to low independent style movies between all of the directors listed also another reason why I wish to investigate this technique as they are all successful in their own right. John Williams, Danny Elfman, Ben Hermmann and Hans Zimmer are some of my favourite composers. I also would research into my favourite writers, what they have created, how they created it, why they did and ultimately the outcome of their creations The artefact I would like to develop would be to direct a short film using Mise en scene and an approach that I have investigate. I would like to create a story line with music and sound effects to try and tell the story on screen without using dialogue. By the end I’d like to discuss the outcome that from my hypothesis that you can tell a story without using dialogue whether it is a complex or simple sequence. |
Career and Creative Aims |
Ideally I would like a career as a sound designer. My main area of interest is working with moving image and how you can create audio and visual bonds. |
Current Skills and Abilities |
I am skilled at using several different software’s such as: Motion, Final Cut Pro, Logic, Pro Tools, Cubase, Reason, Garage band and iMovie. I also have basic knowledge of After effects. I read and write music and I can play musical instruments, I am qualified to HND level in music Performance. Last year through the University I gained valuable experience of writing musical tracks and sound effects for an iPhone application for a company in Glasgow called TWIG. I have edited short movies with my own music and sound effects. I am also currently working with a student at D and J art school creating the audio and sound effects for an animation for their honours project. |
Skill Gaps |
I would like to grow my skills in the film area. I would like to learn more about direction and cinematography and the correlation between that and audio. I would like to identify and investigate how you can tell a story without the use of dialogue, tying all elements of sound design and everything relating to Mise en scene together. I would also like to create a body of work for my portfolio that would include an investigatory written piece of work as well as an artefact. |
