Professional Practice - AG1064

Blog entries for professional Practice module

20th August
In prof practice - the introduction let us know what is expected and how the modules all tie together. Also our presentations and our assessments looked at the proposal and the press pack. Something even now I am going to research and find out what information is most valuable in something like this for potential employers.
We are going over mind maps in our first tutorial which is today.

21st August
MindMaps-AG1064

I began my mind map on bubbl.us will be updating and posting when it's complete. Will also be updating as my ideas progress and become more refined
23rd August
First mind map for my project. Trying to identify key points to where and what I want to research trying to include or cluster together; questions, topics and Ideas that I have.

This is subject to change as my idea becomes more refined and more detailed.

27th August - Lecture
Today's lecture was the focus on the development of my project pitch. Last week we looked at generating research questions around a mind map, this was done to help me establish my research topic/domain. The next stage is for me to formulate these ideas into a project aim and objectives.

Structuring a research project:
Research project & project aim (are the same thing)
Objectives
Methodology
Deliverable
My research question has to be well thought out and have a solid basis within my relevant discipline; it also has to emerge from my research and understanding of existing works. My project doesn't need to be original but I must recognise that. It also must lend itself to some form of investigation so my question can be answered through research.

Project Aim - My project aim is a general statement of what my research should achieve. My general research question is my aim. My pitch in week four is predominantly concerned with my Aim.

Objectives:
Objectives can be considered as specific research questions and objectives are specific actions that will help me achieve my objectives. I can arrive at this by breaking down my project aim. Typically I should considered to have 3/4 objectives. When describing these objectives it would be worthwhile to use actions verbs such as - examine, evaluate, analyze.

Breaking down the objectives into 3/4 parts:
Examine and Discuss
Compare and contrast
Develop and Evaluate
Create an artefact

Tasks to do for this week and next week

Develop a good project aim and 3/4 objectives, emerging from my research domain using the mind map from last week.

Context and Rationale
Context - What's been done before
Rationale - Why is it of interest (I need/want to improve my skills - personal. Popular film design, film technique, why dialogue isn't always needed to protray emotions within a scene on screen).

(taken from AG1064 week 2 PowerPoint)
The Aim is the general research question
•The Objectives are specific research questions
•The Context/Rationale establishes what has been done previously and why the Aim/Objectives are valuable
•HOW are you going to achieve your Objectives?
•You will achieve Objectives by carrying out a series of activities
•Activities deliberately designed for the achievement of a research question are called Methods
•The arrangement of Methods you choose/design in order to achieve your Objectives (and thus the Aim) is called the Methodology
Writing an aim, Imagine that you have developed the following research question…
How does stereoscopic 3D affect the production process and spectator perception of animation?
The equivalent aim could be written as…

This research aims to investigate how stereoscopic 3D affects the
production process and spectator perception of animation.
Or simply…
To investigate how stereoscopic 3D affects the production process
and spectator perception of animation.

This weeks activity: Using your research domain mind map as a
basis: Develop a Project Aim, Break this down into the core
Objectives, Reading! Know the Context of your topic and the
Rationale for your Aim. Begin thinking about the approaches used
in your discipline

4th October - Lecture
We discussed what had to be done by Friday and what we have to
present next week at pitch:

Have a refined aim
Clear and appropriate objectives
Personal statement
Tentative methodlogies.

Methods can be complex, but still clearly generating some form of
evidence interpreted using:

Scientific method - Quantitative research. This isn't one
scientific method, it is based on empirial data, experimental
testing and hypothesis testing.

Qualitative research is based upon textual data.

All methods should result in data, using the analysis to analyse
trends,significance differations, correlations and problems.

Quantitative data is where the research contains numbers and
qualitative generally contains text. Both are scientific.

As artists and creative people we use a artistic method. This
still has to be structutred and transparent in the form of these
examples: Sketchbooks, prototypes, media experiences, design
practice, music performance and animations etc etc.

DATA DOES NOT PROVIDE THE ANSWER - ANALYSIS OF THE DATA DOES!

For the pitch - remember clear aim and objectives. Add my
personal statement to my blog

5th October - Tutorial
We discussed what we had went over since the first week. I have created a detailed mind map of
my research domain which I will upload later. I used this as a basis to form my project aim and
objectives. It highlights my main interests and inspirations and what I want to work on when I
want to be creative. This also conforms to the personal statements. When thinking about the
Research question and objectives I have to consider; context,  rationale, methodology and
Deliverables. The personal staement should clarify and communicate my personal
aims and objectives for the honours year. Whilst the project must have basis and defined research
domain it should still contain creative elements and activity. Consider what Inspires and
interests me, Career and creative aims, current skills and abilities and skill gaps.

All these are relevant to my personal development and I should
make updates of these throughout the course of the year through
my blog.

15th November - Updates.
So far, since the last update my project has changed considerably. I am no longer focusing in on mise en scene so much but more how sound design supports and drives narrative within film. I am also looking at investigating 2 or more specific films by specific directors. Looking at studying the Coen brothers no country for old men and Fargo. Both a polar opposites in terms of plot, however the sound design in both play a large part, and are successful in driving narrative, evoking emotions and adding to the cinematic experience. To be successful with my project I am going to re-work a mind map and work more towards this area - this ties in with me crit week discussions and discussions I've had with Peter O'Hare.
I am also updating my draft proposal and learning contract to tie in with what I have been doing and also my Gannt chart.

Today's lecture focused in our Exhibition and group work. We should have documentation to support our research and our project as it moved forward, considering our target audience and potential employers whilst identifying who we are through business cards
We also discussed our group presentations and how we are to have; one slide identifying who we are (within the group) and two slides per person to discuss our findings as well as a slide to show what we saw and researched.
Individually we have to submit the powerpoint presentation and a 500 word report on the research. What I found interesting and a method that I would find useful for my exposition.
Finally we discussed how we would be presenting our exposition for the show case, what materials we need which is all in the brief requirements.

Updated project map handed in as part of the proposal and supporting documentation

The project proposal has to be handed in this week containing all its supporting documents. I will upload the word documents to here also as it contains progression of my project.
